Two hands 'Angels Share' Shiraz 2007

Two hands 'Angels Share' Shiraz 2007

ANGEL’S SHARE
A GORGEOUS SILKY RICH SHIRAZ

Another good series from Two Hands, Angel's Share, from the region of McLaren Vale, South Australia.

Winemaking :-
The grapes were crushed into and fermented in open top potters, with regular pump overs three times daily to extract colour and tannin. The grapes were then pressed and the wine was transferred to tank and then racked to barrel of oak maturation.

Having 10 months in 14% new American oak hogsheads, the balance in 1, 2 and 3 year old American oak.

Colour :-
Deep purple with a black core.

Aroma :-
The bouquet shows concentrated aromas of plums, scorched earth, licorice, mint, and chocolate whilst exhibiting trademark McLaren Vale characters of coffee and mocha.

Palate :-
The mouth feel and texture is immediate with concentrated flavours of cola, plum and blackcurrant along a vibrant and linear backbone. The mid palate shows terrific focus, the finish balanced by impeccable tannin and acid structure.

Cellar Potential :-
Best 5-7 years.

Chandon Brut NV

Chandon Brut NV

The structure of the wine is characterised by a creamy and soft front/mid palate which flows seamlessly into a generous and persistent length. Flavours of white peach, honey and roasted nuts blend harmoniously to create a complex wine with a refreshing finish. Chandon Brut is a Methode Traditionelle sparkling wine that has spent 18 months ageing on yeast lees before release.

10 Aussie Sparklers ; From the producer that really took Oz fizz to a new level and is still doing so, this has pear, spice and lemon notes with an attractive hint of autolysis on the finish. Ken Gargett, Crema Magazine

A bright-looking wine with a clean aroma reminiscent of citrus and stone fruit…the palate is smooth and fresh with a long, crisp finish. Try it as a party starter.

Elegant, measured and creamy sparkling wine whose appealing pungent and floral aromas of pristine cumquat, melon and raspberries are backed by dough-like and meaty cracked yeast influences. Long and smooth, it's vibrant but restrained, with lively fruit and bakery-like yeast qualities culminating in a soft, but crackly finish, with lingering fruit flavour. Rather Classy. 95 Point ; Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2005

6 of the Best from the Yarra Valley ; Candied fruit and fresh, pear-like aromas lead to a smooth rounded palate and fine structure. The taste is soft and refined, with a fine spine of acidity.

Drinks well with SUSHI ... Great !

Chandon Blanc de Blancs

Chandon Blanc de Blancs

Rather forward and ripe, perhaps lacking the elegance of the ZD of the same vintage, this is a lightly herbal, toasty and honeyed sparkling chardonnay with a fine bead and some development. Its ripe flavours of melon, peach and nectarine reveal nutty, creamy and pastry-like undertones, culminating in a lingering ctrusy finish bound by refreshing acidity. Chandon Blanc de Blancs 2004 have been rated 93 by Jeremy Oliver.

Grapes were sourced from a range of cool climate sites including our Green Point vineyard in the Yarra Valley, along with vineyards in Strathbogie and the King Valley. The cool climate of the Yarra Valley and the high Alpine regions produce Chardonnay base wines with tight palate structures, vibrant fruit characters and high acidity.

Soils at these sites vary from free draining sandy loams to aged alluvial loams with high clay content. Vineyards are planted to various densities depending on soil types, with an average yield between 10 and 12 tonnes per hectare. Most vineyards are trained to the standard vertical shoot positioning trellis to minimise the development of phenolics and tannins whilst maintaining vibrancy of flavour. Winery Notes

Andrew Garrett Pinot Chardonnay

Andrew Garrett Pinot Chardonnay

Crisp fresh Pinot Noir and Chardonnay was sourced from premium Australian vineyards to mix a duo of strawberry and citrus flavours. The Andrew Garrett band of winemakers crushed the fruit and gently massaged the juice from the skins into stainless steel, keeping this wine fresh and lively.

The wine then took a new direction, undergoing secondary fermentation in the bottle for a period of 6-12 months. The wine was then disgorged and placed into its new look pack before release.

Blue Pyrenees Vintage Brut

Blue Pyrenees Vintage Brut

The Vintage Brut expresses the special quality of those component wines chosen for blending, in order to create a consistent House style. The Blue Pyrenees team has incorporated the best cuvees from the 3 classic sparkling varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, into a harmonious whole that represents excellence in varietal and regional character. The judicious use of small amounts of Reserve wines adds complexity and maturity, whilst helping to maintain consistency from year to year.

The dedication, expertise and traditions inherent in the making of fine methode Traditionelle sparkling wines are evident in the sparkling wines produced under the Blue Pyrenees label. The blending skills required to produce these elegant Australian Sparkling wines comes from our long experience and collaboration with the Champagne houses of Charles and Piper Heidsieck in France.

Brilliantly clear, straw yellow with green tints. The Blue Pyrenees Estate Vintage Brut exhibits a fine and persistent bead. The complex aromas of freshly baked bread, toast, nuts and nougat are evidence of extended aging on yeast lees. Subtle hints of confection and citrus give an overall impression of freshness and vitality.

The concentrated yeast autolysis characters described in the aroma, are complimented in the mouth by gentle bubbles and grapefruit flavour. The lively palate is driven by a fresh lemon acidity which lingers harmoniously together with aged complexity. Elegant, complex, lively and long lasting, the Blue Pyrenees Vintage Brut exhibits all the hallmarks of a fine sparkling wine.

Gunderloch Jean-Baptiste Riesling Kabinett

Gunderloch Jean-Baptiste Riesling Kabinett

Jean Baptiste Gunderloch is he protagonist in Carl Zuckmayerґs story "Der frцhliche Weinberg" ( the joly vineyard ). Their wine has been named after him. Jean Baptiste is their only classical medium dry Kabinett wine. It is typical for the red soil of their vineyards.

This very well made expression of a German Riesling, mostly dry with just a little residual sugar. The nose is full of apricots and cold blossoms. The palate is citrusy tart and just a little bit sweet, with noticeable minerality. The wine finishes clean and lively.

The Rheinhessen Kabinett with 11% alcohol having the style of medium-dry, and recently the 2006 Gunderloch Riesling Kabinett Jean-Baptiste was rated with 88 points.

Its one of my favourite Riesling, Drink it while its still available.

Two Hands The Lucky Country Shiraz Cabernet 2003

Two Hands The Lucky Country Shiraz Cabernet 2003

This is actually a more value-oriented ( they say "fun and energetic" ) label for renowned Two Hands' partners Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Here is where some very fine but perhaps not legendary grapes wind up. The composition is 55% Shiraz and 45% Cabernet.

Rated 92 points. The color is very dense cranberry, nearly opaque. Aromas of cherries, pomegranates, bacon, oak and mineral are beautifully well put together. This is a big fruity tannic wine with chewy texture, and everything's in balance. There's nice acidity and a lingering fruit filled dry finish.

Two Hands 2008 Moscato Brilliant Disguise ( 500ml )

Two Hands 2008 Moscato Brilliant Disguise ( 500ml )

BRILLIANT DISGUISE MOSCATO
DELICATELY SWEET WITH A GENTLE SPRITZ

Winemaking :-
Made from 100% White Frontignac ( Muscat ), it is always the first variety to be picked and the first wine to be bottled from a vintage. The essence of the Moscato style is in maintaining freshness, it is pressed, fermented, filtered, and bottled in quick succession.

With 7.0% alcohol, a slight spritziness, and a touch of residual sugar, it is the ideal frothy aperitif wine. Beautiful aromas of tropical fruits and honeysuckle emerge from this crisp, refreshing, light-bodied white. However these wines deteriorate quickly, so enjoy it over the next six to nine months.

Colour :-
Pale straw in colour.

Aroma :-
A zesty bouquet of fresh grapefruits, watermelon, banana peel, straw, limes, sherbet and fresh flowers.

Palate :-
A lovely coating sweet entry that is underpinned by bright acidity and support by a very fine bead. A very good vintage for the Two Hands Moscato.

Serving Suggestion :-
Serve chilled. An extremely versatile wine that is ideal as an aperitif, or the perfect palate cleanser with fresh fruits and/or lighter desserts. Works well with tangy, salty cheese such as feta or a young goats cheese.

Cellar Potential :-
Best drink within 18 months of vintage.

Santa Rita "120" Lontue Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Santa Rita "120" Lontue Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Santa Rita "120" Sauvignon Blanc is part of the value-oriented "120" line of varietals, produced by Santa Rita, and imported by Vineyard Brands. The grapes were sourced from Lontué Valley ( 90% ) and Casablanca Valley ( 10% ). The wine was cold-fermented and aged in stainless steel, by Andrés Ilabaca.

Lontué is located in the southern central wine growing region of Chile, within an area called Maule, and is a bit warmer than Casablanca, which is further north near Santiago. The vineyard locations, mostly non-estate (but under Santa Rita's viticultural supervision), are described as having "loamy clay texture, with good drainage on the Andean Range foothills".

Rated 87 points.

Tasting Note :-

Te color is pale straw with a greenish tint. With the aromas of citrus ( lemon-lime, grapefruit ), gooseberry, and lemongrass/herbs. The mouthfeel is light-bodied, with palate-cleansing acidity. Simple citrusy, white-grapey/peachy flavors are fresh, spritely and resolve quickly. Very refreshing.

Casa Lapostolle Rapel Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2003

Casa Lapostolle is a Chilean Estate of French roots, having been founded in 1994 by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle ( of Grand Marnier fame ), and with French Winemaker Michel Rolland in house.

This wild white is crisp, full-bodied for a white, with aromas and flavors of melon, lime and grapefruit, and a tart clean dry finish. This would be great with Louisiana boiled crawfish.

The closure is a genuine cork. ( A screw cap would be a plus ).

Two Hands

Two Hands

The 'two hands' are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz based wines from prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia.

Michael Twelftree, initially from a construction background, spent a number of years exporting Australian Wine to the USA and Asia. Richard Mintz a chartered accountant, was formerly C.E.O. of one of Australia's leading Cooperage's in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. With Twelftree’s contacts and wine savvy approach and Mintz’s management skills and business acumen, the two old friends decided to make some wine together.

In 2000, they started with just 17 tonnes of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions.

From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad with a healthy stream of reviews culminating in, this year, being voted ‘Best New Producer’ in the 2003/2004 Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide by Huon Hooke and Ralph Kyte-Powell.

Why do we do the things we do ? From the beginning, we have set out to build a wine company that is different in its approach, one that is innovative and not afraid to think outside the square. We want to put some fun back into wine.

In its simplest form, it could be said we squeeze the grapes and put them in a bottle. However, in practice there are many different steps and countless hours involved, from vineyard, through winemaking, tasting, blending and maturation in order to make consistent, well-made wines. With regards to our winemaking style, we concentrate our efforts on sourcing the best fruit from the best Shiraz vineyards in Australia, working closely with our growers on achieving the full potential of each individual site.

At Two Hands we are very lucky in that we love what we do and hope this is communicated through our wines and the Two Hands philosophy. We hope our new cellar door and winery at Neldner’s Road, Marananga in the Barossa Valley, will come to be regarded as one of the highlights of the region, in addition to giving our customers a place to meet and taste with us.

Lastly, why do we do the things we do ? The answer is simple. Achieving our best, gives us a sense of excitement, satisfaction and pride in our daily work.

• Quality, without compromise is central to the Two Hands philosophy, driving all the decisions from fruit and oak selection to packaging and promotion.

• We seek to differentiate ourselves; to be unique, fun and innovative in our business approach whilst maintaining a high degree of professionalism and integrity.

• It is our aim to make all the wines to a ‘Garden Series’ level, and de-classify accordingly.

• This is achieved by sourcing the best parcels of fruit available to us from six prime regions within Australia, with small batch production a major factor in contributing to the complexity and personality of the finished wines.

• It is our intention that the fruit be the primary feature of any Two Hands Shiraz with oak playing a supporting role.

• By capping annual production at 10,000 cases we will remain a small boutique producer, to maintain consistent price points in all markets, and not increase prices unjustifiably.

Proprietor – One Hand - Michael Twelftree

Michael came to the wine industry from a construction background having spent years attending wine tastings and collecting the wines of the world. In 1998, he established his own Australian wine export company and after three successful years of selling other people’s wine, he and business partner Richard Mintz decided to start their own operation.

From day one, Michael’s role has been multi-faceted. He heads up the marketing side of things and is constantly nutting out new ways to keep the ideas fresh. He is eagerly involved in all aspects of the production process and has successfully overseen the construction of the new Two Hands cellar door and winery in the Barossa Valley at Neldner's Road, Marananga.

Proprietor – The Other Hand - Richard Mintz

Richard was a disenchanted chartered accountant by training with an M.B.A. from Adelaide University whos passion for wine started when he was appointed Chief Executive of one of Australia's leading cooperages. In early 2003, Richard left the cooperage to devote himself wholly to Two Hands Wines. He is active in all areas of the business from handling many of our long term projects to supporting international distributors, liaising with growers and even getting his 'two hands' dirty during vintage.

Winemaker - Matthew Wenk

On graduating from Roseworthy with a degree in Oenology and honours in yeast microbiology, Matt worked as assistant winemaker at Nepenthe Vineyards, in the Adelaide Hills with intermittent vintages in the Hunter Valley, Languedoc and Sonoma Valley. Over time, Matt became winemaker and production manager working with senior winemaker Peter Leske.

In addition to this, he worked closely with contract clients and their wines, such as Tim Knappstein of Lenswood Vineyards. In 2002, after five years in the Adelaide Hills he was offered the position of head winemaker with Two Hands Wines. In 2002 Matt was a recipient of the Shaw and Smith/Len Evans Tutorial Scholarship and has recently completed a winemaking study tour of France, Italy and Spain.

Deep vibrant red with a compellingly complex aroma of blackcurrants, cherries and violets, along biscuity, hazelnut oak characters. The palate shows great structure, tightness and length. Blueberry, chocolate, and cherry flavours are supported by firm grained tannins. This wine will need time to show it’s true potential.

** Estate Cabernet Merlot
Deep red colour with slight brick hues. The aroma, immediately closed with hints of cherry and dark berries and oak, evolves in the glass over time to reveal a vibrant minty perfume, aromas of violets, sage, lavender and cocoa. The palate also takes some time for the fruit to emerge from its tight bindings of fine tannin. Excellent length through the palate and finishing with clean pure fruit flavours. Classical Margaret River Cabernet characters.

** Estate Chardonnay
Deep straw in colour. An intriguingly complex aroma that shows fresh mineral, nectarine fruit flavours surrounded by secondary characters of nutmeg, truffle, lanolin and cream. The palate is tightly bound with firm acidity but coated with a lovely fine texture that runs through the palate and lingers on the finish.

** Estate Semillon
This wine is straw in colour. The aromas of this varietal are always a conversation starter. Complex and intriguing! It has vibrant lemon characters combined with hints of saltbush, bay leaf and fresh rain on dry grass. The aromas of lemon and ocean grasses follow through and dominate the palate. Silky smooth, clean, and crisp, this wine has excellent length. Due to the high acids and fruit weight in this particular wine cellaring is recommended. These wines can last anywhere between 20-30 years if kept in ideal conditions.

** Estate Riesling
Pale straw in colour. Aromas of talc, wet slate, nutmeg and pear. The aroma is clean and well defined. The palate has a flinty quality finishing with the sweetness of apple and pear. A moderate acidity, though quite dry and quenching, with excellent length.

Vina Haras de Pirque

Vina Haras de Pirque

Haras de Pirque's name honors the country's oldest thoroughbred breeding stud , founded in 1892. In 1991 , after a highly successful business career in Chile's private sector , entrepreneur Eduardo Matte acquired an estate that he would later name Haras de Pirque , in the southwestern part of Pirque , a prestigious winegrowing area situated in the Maipo Valley. Eduardo Matte's objectives included launching a major winery project , and expanding and improving the exising.

This property today covering 600 hectares , gently ascends the lower slopes of a spur of the Andes Mountains. In these foothills , between 1992 and 1993 , one hundred and twenty hectares of vineyards were planted , mainly with the reds Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Carmenere , and the whites , Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Along with wine-growing and thoroughbred raising , Eduardo Matte gives free rein to his other passions , one of which is the collection of old carriage , all drawn by suitably bred horses. The collection cirrently features 18 models with a stable of 30 horses that , together with four thoroughbred stallions and nearly two hundred mares and foals , trot and gallop through Haras de Pirque's wide , green pastures.

Vina Haras de Pirque

Now , lets talk about his Vineyards. Vina Haras de Pirque is located in the wine-growing region of the Maipo Valley , Pirque sub-region , both classified internationally as producers of fine wines. Due to its unique geographical and climatic conditions , the Upper Maipo area , where Pirque is situated , is renowned for its production of Chile's best red wines , especially Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vina Haras de Pirque features a uniquely designed , Horse-shoe shaped winery , the Only one of its kind in the world. Build on the side of a hill , the 5300 square meter , 1.5 million liter production capacity structure dominates and is a tribute to both the estate's vineyards and the thoroughbred farm. The inner sloping floors allow the force of gravity to slowly , gently move the musts and wines , thereby obviating the need for pumps and other kinds of tranfer systems. This substantially reduces the potential for oxidation and the loss of the wine's organoleptic characteristics.

The Horse-shoe shaped estate now operates both as equesteian centre and state-of-the-art winery ( the influence of the Matte family's Chilean thoroughbreds can be seen in the 'Equus' range ). Quality has always been high. This has resulted in a flagship wine called 'Albis' , a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere , spearheaded by oenologists Renzo Cotarella ( of Antinori ) , Cecilia Guzman ( of Haras de Pirque ) and their consultant winemaker , Alvaro Espinoza.

Clifford Bay

Clifford Bay

Eric and Beverley Bowers formed Clifford Bay Estate in 1994 after recognizing early that the Awatere Valley in Marlborough , New Zealand , was a region of great winemarking promise. The Estate vineyard was established on the banks of the beautiful Awatere River that flows from its birth in the high country alpine basins.

Since the first award winning vintage in 1997 , Clifford Bay Estate has continued to produce exceptional wines from their own several premium vineyards located in the Awatere Valley. Their latest Sauvignon Blanc continues a proud tradition of every vintage that they have produced winning Gold Medals.

The Marlborough region is widely recogised as producing the Best Sauvignon Blanc , the world has to offer and the Awatere Valley is becoming widely recognised for its own distinct Marlborough flavour. The climate is punctuated with cool nights and dry sunny days offering the grapes a long slow ripening period which in turn produces very aromatic and intensely flavoured wines.

Complementing those natural attributes are the skills in vineyard management and winemarking , which Managing Director , Eric Bowers describes as "a great team operation".

Clairault

Clairault

Clairault winery is named after Cape Clairault peninsular situated along the coastine of Margaret River's wine region. 3 hours south of Perth, Western Australia. Since its inception, Clairault has been recognised as a serious player in Margaret River. The winery was the 6th property to plant grapes in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. Situated less than 4 kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean and 120 metres above sea level, the property is 230 hectares ( 570 acres ) in size, with an average of 300 sunshine days per year.

Now the winery was owned by the Martin Family, a new era has begun. Bill and Ena along with their 3 sons, Shane, Conor and Brian, bought the property in 1999. They immediately set about turning the winery into a "no compromise" operation.

No winery would be complete without a star winemaker. Will Shields joined Clairault as Chief Winemaker from Vasse Felix in 2003 and sole focus in the Clairault Estate and Clairault Range.

Clairault Estate Range

The Clairault Estate wines are handcrafted and specially selected from the oldest vines, now in their 30th years of production. They are matured in individual batches using 100% French oak. Will's strict guidelines ensure that only select barrels are used in the final blend. Yields can be as low as 2 tonnes per acre from bunch thinning by hand and spur pruning. The Clairault Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Clairault Estate Canernet Merlot spend 24 months in oak prior to bottling. The Clairault Estate Chardonnay spends a total of 12 months in French oak with partial malolactic fermentation.

Clairault Range

The Clairault Range is also Estate grown fruit. The average age of the vines is 15 years and yields are as low as 2 tonnes per acre. The Clairault Sauvignon Blanc is un-oaked, the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is 95% un-oaked and the Clairault Chardonnay is 70% un-oaked. On the whole, the winemaking is kept simple for this wine range allowing the fruit quality to speck for itself. The focus is on crisp, clean and crunchy flavours giving the wines their drink now appeal.

The Clairault Cabernet Sauvignon spends 18 months maturing in French oak and is a true reflection of elegant and balanced Margaret River wine. The Clairault Cabernet Merlot is matured in 1 to 4 years old French oak barriques for 18 months before blending developing a rich and dense palate with ripe tannins and a firm acidity. The fruit for their Clairault Shiraz is sourced from a grower in Wilyabrup who has been supplying Clairault for over 5 years. Pepper and savoury notes make their wine food friendly.

In 2004, Clairault Reserve Cabernet and Clairault Chardonnay won Gold at the London International Wine Challenge. In 2005, the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 was awarded one of the TOP 100 WINES for 2005 at the Sydney International Wine Show and one of the TOP 5 Cabernet Sauvignon's produced in Australia in 2005 by Winestate. Following the success of the Canernet Sauvignon, the Clairault Chardonnay 2004 received the BEST in CLASS at the 2005 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Growing under the house flag of a pioneering South West family , located a stones throw from the stars of the Willyabrup Valley lies Cape Grace's carefully tended vineyard.

Cape Grace Wines is owned and operated by Robert and Karen Karri-Davies. A great-grandson of timber baron M.C.Davies of Karridale - one of the founders of Margaret River, Robert and Karen Karri-Davies has returned with his family to the region to handcraft fine wines that are full of the flavour and character of Margaret River.

In 1996, Robert and Karen Karri-Davies planted their 15 acre vineyard on the headwaters of the Willyabrup Valley. From the start Robert & Karen set out to produce handcrafted, luxury wines at Cape Grace. The fact that 'great wine is grown in the vineyard' was of vital importance, so when the farm on which Dr Tom Cullity originally wanted to establish Vasse Felix became available, Robert and Karen knew they had 15 acres of prime grape-growing vineyard.

Philosophy of Cape Grace is a work in progress of a long-term commitment to excellence. Its wine is as much about nuance and art as it is skills and passion. Their estate grown fruit and vinification on the property , fermentation in new French & American Oak ( Seguin Moreau ) , free run juice and light pressing , minimal interference and strict temperature and hygiene controls are the hallmarks of a fine wine and all are employed at Cape Grace Wines.

Since a trophy wine for the 'BEST Wine at the 2001 Sheraton Wine Award', with their first vintage , the 2000 Cape Grace Cabernet Sauvignon set the uncompromising quality benchmark for all future wines. This ongoing challenge has been met a splendid collection of Gold , Silver and Bronze Medals for many of their wines of subsequent vintages.

The Laurance

The Laurance

The Laurance, which was one of my favourite. This property comprises over 120 hectares, 22 hectares under vine, and fronts the primary tourist route of Caves Road, linking the town sites of Busselton, Dunsborough and Yalling up in the north with Margaret River and Augusta in the south providing access to the majority of the region's main tourist attractions.

Laurance was established in May 2001 and is situated 255 kms south of the City of Perth and falls within the prestigious Margaret River region. The Margaret River district is recognised globally as a premium viticultural region producing less than 1 percent of Australia's wine but over 15 percent of Australia's premium wine. It has an abundance of natural attractions to indulge your senses including underground crystal caves, a rugged coastline with pristine white beaches and natural forests.

In 2001, the Laurance family purchased 40 hectares of prime viticultural land, this property consisted of 21 hectares of vines planted in 1996, three white and three red varieties. Dianne Laurance had a vision to create a Cellar with a difference, so in order to retain the vineyard as a private family property, the Laurance's acquired the adjoining 60 hectares to fulfil the dream.

The Cellar is adorned with beautiful artworks and sculptures from around Australia. The grounds boast a 1,000 bush rose garden and two spectacular sculptures. As you approach the rntrance, you will notice "The Garden of Eden" tree with its one tempting red apple. This piece designed by Dianne and commissioned by Wil Wilson of Willie Wildlife Sculptures to create.

In the middle of the lake suspended on a 14 metre electric blue pole you will see "Free as a Bird". This magnificent 3 metre lady is finished in 24ct gold leaf and represents the Freedom and Opportunities that this great country of their affords them all. This piece was also designed by Dianne and commissional by Charlie & Joan Smith. Nicknamed by the locals as the "Chick on a Stick".

Now, lets talk about their wines. Laurance produces two labels, the premium range "Laurance of Margaret River" and "Aussie Jeans Rock". There are nine wines in their portfolio. Both labels are winning some outstanding National and International Awards for the wine and packaging.

Here were their wines i would like to share with you :

Aromas of Chinese gooseberries, pear and zesty citrus introuduce a cache of ripe flavoursome fruits. Laurance of Margaret River
CHARDONNAY

Bright and lively with complex stone fruit and fig aromas in front of some smoke, toastiness, vanilla and hazelnut. The palate is nicely textured with a long intricate minerally aftertaste. The wine is delicious in its youth; however, those who cellar it with care will be well rewarded with increased complexity.

Laurance of Margaret River
RED
The colour is a welcoming and refined ruby red. The nose is an infusion of red berries, plums and black currants, supported by gentle and opulent tannins. The Cabernet provides the definition of structure, while the Merlot provides a plummy softness. This aristocratic style is accessible now, and should be at its peak after two to five years of careful maturation.

Laurance of Margaret River
Just A Sweetie

Just a Sweetie is our first dessert style wine. Grapefruit, fig and floral aromas. The palate is medium sweet, with lively acidity which reveals crème-brule, apricot and orange peel flavours. We have found that Just a Sweetie is a wonderful partner to dried fruit, strongly flavoured cheeses, nuts and those wonderful citrus flavoured desserts.

Laurance Aussie Jeans Rock

This Margaret River Shiraz based Rose has aromas of raspberry and freshly crushed strawberries and a dry lingering finish with a hint of sweetness on the back palate. A refreshing aperitif on its own as well as an ideal partner for their wonderful Aussie seafood and our local spicy dishes.

Laurance Aussie Jeans Rock

Laurance Aussie Jeans Rock
MERLOT

A bright, fresh merlot with youthful, purple colour and aromas of dark plums, vanilla and ripe blackberries. The warm ripening season of 2005 has resulted in a wine with soft, ripe tannins and plenty of juicy, sweet fruit characters. Matured in 225 L barriques, the wine displays chocolate and mocha oak characters with delicious blackcurrant and plum flavours that last through the palate. Ready to enjoy now however the wine will develop further complexity with short term cellaring.

Best Regards

Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel is located five kilometres south-east of Orange at the northern limit of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation.

The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet".

Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom.

The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. The letter from Louis XIV, also signed by Colbert, to Pierre de Beaucastel is still in our possession.

Two centuries later at the time of the phylloxera, the owner of Beaucastel was Elie Dussaud, a companion of Ferdinand de Lesseps who built the Suez Canal. In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978 ...

Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history.

Beaucastel Red

The result of all the efforts and innovations of three generations of the Perrin family is evident when one has the pleasure of tasting a good vintage of Château de Beaucastel at its peak. If one word could describe the red wines of Beaucastel it would be "pure" : because these wines are the natural expression of the place and the grapes from which they come.

In this case the vineyard is a patchwork of the 13 permitted grape varieties It covers 70 hectares in all. The soil is the same porous, aerated blanket of Alpine diluvium ( with rounded stones ) over a base of Miocene marine limestone that exists elsewhere on the estate. The vines are on average 50 years old and yields are never more than 30 hectolitres per hectare and often much less. This is a vibrant and healthy vineyard due to years of organic cultivation.

The red wine of Beaucastel, as is the Coudoulet de Beaucastel, is structured, intense yet lean, partially thanks to the large percentage of Mourvedre - about 30% - in the final blend. Its austere tannic backbone and resistance to oxidation help Beaucastel age gracefully. Grenache ( 30% ) contributes a warming sensation of ripe fruit and a velvety feeling in the mouth. Syrah at 10%, and Muscardin and Vaccarese with around 5% each, add colour and spicy aromas while increasing the wines ageing potential. 5% of Cinsault is added for softness and its special bouquet.

The remainder is made up of small quantities of the seven other varieties allowed in Châteauneuf du Pape. They add that extra note of graceful complexity which make Château de Beaucastel such an extraordinary wine. Once the flash heating method has been accomplished, Beaucastel Rouge follows a more or less classic vinification. Most of the varieties are fermented separately until the malo-lactic fermentation is completed, at which point they are blended after comprehensive tastings.

The young wine then matures in large oak barrels of 40 hl /1000 gal. for about 12 months. Fining is carried out with egg whites, and then the wine is bottled and left to age one more year in Beaucastel’s cellars before being offered for sale.

The Grenache and the Cinsault give the wine its colour, intensity and softness. The Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscardin and Vaccarèse give the wine its renowned ageing potential and dark, classic character. The Counoise, Picpoul and other varieties provide freshness, fragrance and aromatic quality.

Beaucastel white

The white wines of Château de Beaucastel are amongst the finest expressions of Roussanne grapes grown in a warm climate. The two cuvees have a lot in common but show different personalities : the standard bottling, made from 80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc, whose vines are between 10 and 40 years old, and a small quantity of the “Vieilles Vignes” cuvee, produced entirely from Roussanne vines of at least 65 years of age.

When the right moment has been determined, the grapes are harvested by hand and taken quickly to the winery in small baskets. A second hand sorting is done upon arrival to cull any unripe or damaged grapes. After a light pneumatic pressing, the must is allowed to clarify overnight. Thirty percent of the wine is fermented in barrels and the remainder in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. Once the malo-lactic fermentation is completed, half of the new wine matures in small oak barrels and half in vats for about eight months. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée is kept in oak for a longer period.

Hommage

The Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin from those years was made mostly from very old Mourvedre vines yielding tiny quantities of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit. Those fortunate enough to have tasted this never forget it. Truly a "grand vin".

The wine was deep black-ruby colour. Profound aromas of black cherry, cassis, spice, leather and game, with an almost medicinal aspect. Very sweet entry, then firm and closed, almost too hard on the palate today. Extremely concentrated on the finish.

A wine to be kept for your retirement.

Roussanne Vieilles Vignes

100% Roussanne, hand-picked and collected in baskets, grapes sorted, pneumatic pressing and clarification of the must. Fermentation takes place 50% in barrels and 50% in stainless steel vats. Pale yellow in colour, acacia flowers and honey. The palate was very rich, honeyed.

Its a wine of exceptional complexity and balance, it should approach its peak in five to six years.

Coudoulet de Beaucastel Red

Coudoulet, as Beaucastel, owes its ability to age to the high proportion of Mourvedre - about 30% - that makes up the final cuvée. This provides a tannic backbone and resistance to oxidation that ensures long life. In addition, Mourvedre introduces aromas of leather, tobacco, and spice to the blend. One should note also that the Beaucastel and Coudoulet vineyards are at the northern limit for growing Mourvedre, and it is well known that the best expressions of any varietal come from the cooler parts of their growing areas.

The other main variety, Grenache, gives Coudoulet the rounded fullness and intense fruit that is typical of Côtes du Rhône. Syrah and Cinsault represent about 20% each and bring tannins and aromatic complexity to Coudoulet. Colour was bright and lively, with great depth. Red fruits with the palate of luscious, with hints of thyme.

Coudoulet White

30% Marsanne, 30% Viognier, 30% Bourboulenc and 10% Clairette, which were hand picked grapes and collected in baskets prior to sorting, pneumatic pressing and clarification of the must, fermentation partially in oak barrels and partially in steel tanks. With a eight months maturing in barrels and steel tanks, before blending and bottling, without cold stabilisation. Having a pale yellow colour with peaches and honey. The palate was rounded and rich, full bodied wine with a balanced freshness and floral notes.
